St. Augustine is known for it’s fabulous festival seasons — fall and spring! Here’s the fall 2016 list of festivals and events from Totally St Augustine.
FIESTA DE AVILES
Oct. 7-9: St. Augustine’s favorite annual street party returns this fall on Aviles Street. Fiesta de Avilés will take place from Friday through Sunday, Oct. 7-9 on Avilés Street, the oldest street in the nation’s oldest city and the heart of St. Augustine’s original art district. With three days of live music, art exhibits, music, dancing, costumes, and a special “Running of the Bulls,” the Fiesta is a celebration of St. Augustine’s Spanish heritage. Friday, Oct. 7
The Fiesta de Avilés begins with First Friday Art Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. With 7 art galleries, Aviles Street has become a hub for the art community to share and appreciate the wealth of local talent. The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum also will participate, with artisans and artists in the gardens.
Saturday, Oct. 8
Events will include live music on the Avilés Street Stage from 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Music and dancing includes First Coast Flamenco, followed by local music favorite Luis Mario and his Latin Jazz Band.
The annual Running of the Bulls begins at 3 p.m. with a children’s race at 3 p.m. and the adult race at 3:30 p.m. This event is a twist on the Spanish custom — in St. Augustine, participants are chased by special guests in “bull” costumes in a sprint down Avilés Street. Everyone is invited to participate, and prizes are offered by the Aviles Street merchants for the winners.
The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum will be hosting local artisans and artists in their garden throughout the day.
Sunday, Oct. 9
Photographer Rick McAllister will be giving a special presentation and photo exhibit titled ‘Walking Across Spain on the Camino de Santiago’ at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9 in Trinity Hall meeting room at Trinity Episcopal Church, 215 Saint George St., downtown St. Augustie. Rick walked the 500-mile pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela over a 7- week period. He traveled through some of Spain’s most beautiful areas, from the Pyrenees, through the vineyards of the wine country and finally to Galicia.
: The St. Augustine Greek Festival celebrates all things Greek — food, music, dancing and heritage. The annual event is held at Francis Field, 29 W. Castillo Drive, downtown St. Augustine. Live music will be on stage throughout the weekend, with dance performances, a dance floor for the public, an outdoor marketplace, children’s activities and more. Admission is $3 for adults, with free admission for children ages 3 to 12 and active military. OKLAHOMA! AT LIMELIGHT THEATRE
Sept. 21-Oct. 23: Limelight Theatre opens its 25th season with the musical Oklahoma! In the Oklahoma territory at the turn of the 20th century, two young cowboys vie with an evil ranch hand and a traveling peddler for the hearts of the women they love. A 25th Season Party on Wednesday, September 21 includes dinner at The Raintree Restaurant, followed by the opening performance on Limelight’s Matuza Main Stage. Oct. 8, Oct. 15 and Oct. 22: Junie B. Jones, The Musical – a delightful adaptation of four of Barbara Park’s best-selling books, brought to life in a genuinely comical (and not strictly-for-kids) musical. Oct. 6-9: The St. Johns County Center for the Arts Theatre Department at St. Augustine High School will present the musical Urinetown. CORN MAZE & MORE
Oct. 8-30: Nine acres of a local farm becomes Sykes & Cooper Corn Maze each year — with live music, the maze, games such as a corn cannon, live animals and more at 5995 Brough Road in Elkton, just off State Road 207. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Cost is $10 for ages 3 to 64; $7 for seniors and military with ID; and free for ages 2 and younger. Oct. 13: This annual fundraiser was designed to heighten awareness for cancer patients in the area. Bratini will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Serenata Beach Club, 3175 S. Ponte Vedra Blvd, South Ponte Vedra Beach. Local men model decorated bras and participants can bid of the bras. The event benefits the StAR Council, ArtBreakers (a local nonprofit specializing in services for cancer patients), and Pink Heals (a program that maintains fundraising dollars locally). Oct. 16: The 11th Annual Taste of The Beach celebrates will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Oct. 16 at the St. Johns County Pier Park & Pavilion, 350 A1A Beach Blvd., St. Augustine Beach. Food from more than a dozen St. Augustine beach restaurants will be served as samples as each compete for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes in appetizer, entree and dessert categories. Judge’s Choice, Best Booth Display and People’s Choice awards also will be part of the event. Proceeds will benefit Betty Griffin House, a shelter and service provider for victims of abuse and their families. Admission is FREE. Taste tickets can be purchased on site. ANCIENT CITY KIDS DAY
Oct. 22: The 20th Annual Ancient City Kids Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at Francis Field , 29 W. Castillo Drive, downtown St. Augustine. The event is FREE for the public, and will include over 40 youth service agencies offering carnival style games and activities, arts and crafts, contests for kids, and live entertainment all day. THE GREAT AMERICAN SCARECROW FESTIVAL
Oct. 22: The annual Great American Scarecrow Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22at Simple Gestures, 4 E. White St. and Anastasia Boulevard, on the island over the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine. The event includes scarecrow making, apple bobbing, corn hole, face painting, barbecue, pies (that benefit Pie in the Sky in Hastings), pumpkin painting, live music by Lonesome Bert and the Skinny Lizards and other local musicians. Admission is FREE. Proceeds go to Pie in the Sky, a community outreach program in Hastings.
RIVER OF LIFE FALL FESTIVAL
Oct. 22: This free family festivalThere will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at River of Life United Methodist Church, 2600 Race Track Road, in St. Johns. THE SHRINER’S CHOWDER CHALLENGE FOR CHILDREN
Oct. 30: Formerly that annual Great Chowder Debate, the new Shriner’s Chowder Challenge for Children will feature more than 30 local St. Augustine restaurants competing for the title of best chowder from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, 1340 A1A South, St. Augustine. This event is hosted by the St. Augustine Shrine Club. A panel of judges will consist of individuals chosen by our sponsors, as well as local dignitaries and culinary food experts. They will judge each category as to a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner and then each of these winners will be announced and presented an award in each category of chowder. There will also be a People’s Choice Award, which allows all attendees to fill out a ballot for their favorite participating restaurant. Proceeds for the Shriners Hospital for Children are raised by purchasing $1 tickets for a sample of chowder, as well as from the sale of beer, wine, mixed drinks, soda, water, hot dogs and chips. Our Masonic Youth Program — The Rainbow Girls — will be selling the hot dogs, soda, water and chips. Proceeds benefit all proceeds raised will benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children. THE NORMAL HEART (SJCCA DRAMA)
Nov. 3-5: A searing drama about public and private indifference to the AIDS plague and one man’s lonely fight to awaken the world to the crisis. Students in the drama department at St. Johns County Center for the Arts at St. Augustine High School will perform this play. Produced to acclaim in New York, London and Los Angeles, The Normal Heart follows Ned Weeks, a gay activist enraged at the indifference of public officials and the gay community. While trying to save the world from itself, he confronts the personal toll of AIDS when his lover dies of the disease. Director is Mike Beaman. Nov. 4-6: The 9th Annual Pirate Gathering will be held behind the St. Augustine Marketplace, from Exit 311 of Interstate 95 on State Road 207, in St. Augustine. Tucked away on 40-plus acres, piratical shenanigans will take place. Pirates, mermaids, sword battles, black powder demonstrations, Blackbeard’s kids show, pirate stunt shows and so much more. The gathering is hosted by The Ancient City Privateers. Admission is $5 per day for adults; $2 per day for children ages 5 to 12; and free for little ones under age 5. SCHOOL OF ROCK
Nov. 4-6: School of Rock is a brand new musical based on the famous Paramount film written by Mike White, which starred Jack Black. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4-5, and 2 p.m. Nov. 5-6 on the Matuza Main Stage at Limelight Theare. The musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Completely disinterested in academic work, Dewey decides to create his own curriculum, turning his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. The stage musical on Broadway is produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has composed 14 new songs to create a score, which also features all of the original songs from the movie. 33rd ANNUAL GREAT CHOWDER DEBATE
Nov. 6: Love chowder? Want to try as many chowders as possible in St. Augustine? The 33rd annual Great Chowder Debate will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 at The Conch House, 57 Comares Ave. SOriginated by The Conch House in 1984, the event is one of the longest-running chowder championships in the country. Local restaurants compete for the ultimate chowder bragging rights by entering their specialty chowders in one of five categories: Minorcan conch, Minorcan clam, New England clam, seafood, and non-Seafood. There is also the People’s Choice, voted on by the public so patrons are encouraged to make their vote count. In addition to the delicious chowder, the main goal of the Great Chowder Debate is to help raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Johns County (BBBS). All proceeds go to this local charity. BBBS serves children through-out St. Johns County with the mission of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. ST. AUGUSTINE MAKERS FEST
Nov. 6: The St. Augustine Maker’s Fest will be an all-encompassing entertainment event where food, drink and all types of art are celebrated for one festive day. The first event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Mark Lance National Armory, 190 San Marco Ave., in uptown St. Augustine. Not only will local artisans showcase their talents and skills, but the community, as well as visitors, can enjoy and purchase these unique works of art. “Makers” are all those who create or produce something of value. Their crafts include anything from baking, jewelry or wood work, mixing essential oils to photography, videography and making music. This event is open to people of all ages. It will include plenty of hands-on activities and demonstrations as well as live musical acts and culinary delights. Nov. 18: The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Swamp Radio present Early Thanks, a southern-style Thanksgiving dinner and radio show event, live from the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. On Saturday, Nov. 18, join the cast of Swamp Radio, Northeast Florida’s beloved (and hilarious) live radio show, for an Early Thanksgiving event at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. Nov. 18-20: The United Tiny House Association (originally the Georgia Tiny House Association), who organized the highly successful 2016 Georgia Tiny House Festival, and tiny house owner and enthusiast, Shorty Robbins, are excited to announce the 2016 Florida Tiny House Festival, set for Nov. 18-20 at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds, 5480 State Road 207, in Elkton. There will be a large assortment of tiny houses and micro homes, workshops, presentations, vendors, entertainment, children’s activities, and more. New at the 2016 Florida Tiny House Festival will be the addition of vintage campers! NIGHTS OF LIGHTS
Nov. 19-Jan. 31: The 23rd Annual Nights of Lights opens on Saturday, Nov. 19 during Light-Up Night, an event that includes live music in the Plaza de la Constitucion, between King Street and Cathedral Place in downtown St. Augustine. The music will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the lighting ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. Each year, former St. Augustine mayors gather to flip the switch during Light Up Night. The City of St. Augustine’s giant tree in the Plaza is lit first, then all the lights come on surrounding the area. Many families start the holiday season with this tradition — going to dinner downtown and and then watching as the lights are turned on. Nights of Lights, which includes more than 2 million lights on city buildings and businesses, continues through Jan. 31, 2016. Go to nightsoflights.com
Dec. 17-18: See student and professional ballet dancers on stage in this holiday classic! This spectacular holiday show features mischievous mice, dancing dolls, sparkling snowflakes, elegant costumes, custom-designed scenery, and magic that will charm the entire family. The Nutcracker is staged each year by the St. Augustine Ballet, a non-profit community ballet organization that presents professional quality ballet to St. Augustine and surrounding communities.
